Rick Wakeman (British Live Performance Series)
By 1990, when Rick and his three backing musicians hit Central Television’s studios to tape an hour-long programme in the Bedrock series, he’d left the cape in his wardrobe. He’d also left Yes far behind, having departed in 1974 before a return spell in 1976-79. (He’d tour with fellow former members Anderson, Bruford and Howe a decade later, just before this show.)
The set he chose to play in Nottingham reflected the solo career he had been successfully pursuing since ‘The Six Wives of Henry VIII’ reached the UK album Top 10 in 1973, selling over 15 million copies worldwide and eventually going gold in America, where it peaked at Number 30. The totally instrumental album majored on Wakeman’s facility on such instruments as the Moog synthesiser, electric harpsichord and Mellotron, and featured past and present bandmates from the Strawbs and Yes as backing musicians. Fans that purchase the CD version will also enjoy several pages of freshly-written liner notes from famed music biographer Michael Heatley.
